Dwain Lingenfelter was elected Leader of the Saskatchewan New
Democratic Party on June 6, 2009. On September 21, 2009, he was elected
MLA for Regina Douglas Park in a by-election resulting from the
retirement of Harry Van Mulligen.
Dwain was raised on a family farm north of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan.
His parents, six sisters and two brothers shared a small farm home.
Dwain learned early about the value of cooperation and the rewards of
hard work. With the support of his family, friends, neighbours,
teachers and community, Dwain has become a successful farmer, public
servant and business person.
Following high school, Dwain continued farming while working as a
Customs Officer and studying for his degree in Political Science. He
and his family still own and operate a grain and cattle farm near
Shaunavon.
Dwain was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in 1978. He was
appointed Minister of Social Services in 1980, a position he held until
becoming Opposition House Leader in 1982. He was appointed Minister of
Economic Development in 1991, a post he held until 1996. From 1996 to
1999, Dwain was Minister responsible for Crown Investments Corporation.
He was Deputy Premier from 1995 to 2000, Government House Leader from
1997 to 2000, and Minister responsible for Agriculture from 1999 to
2000.
Dwain was appointed Vice President, Government Relations for the
Canadian energy company, Nexen Inc., in September 2000. In this role,
he worked around the globe and saw first-hand how different governments
were able to encourage long-term prosperity for their citizens, while
navigating the choppy waters of economic uncertainty.
Dwain has been actively involved in the community. He is the Past Chair
and CEO of the Canada Arab Business Council. He has served as a Board
Member of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, and as a member of the
Mexico-Canada Energy Working Group Committee, and one of the chairs of
the Mt. Royal University Foundation.
Dwain is married to Rubiela. Dwain and Rubiela have a blended family of
five children: Sacha, Matthew, Travis, Sahid and Hannah.
