Long-time MLA Warren McCall announced today that he will not be seeking re-election in the 2020 provincial election. He is currently an NDP Member of the Legislative Assembly representing the constituency of Regina Elphinstone-Centre and is the NDP Critic for Advanced Education, SaskTel, and Parks, Culture and Sport among several others.
“I want to say thank you very much to my friends and neighbours in Elphinstone for having entrusted me with the honour of a lifetime working for them and with them as their MLA,” said McCall.
First elected in a 2001 by-election, Warren served in the Lorne Calvert NDP Government and cabinet. McCall served in a variety of roles, most notably as Minister of Advanced Education and Employment as well as Minister of Corrections and Public Safety and worked on several committees.
McCall was subsequently returned to the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly as MLA for Elphinstone in 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2016. By the time of the 2020 election, McCall will have worked for the people of Regina Elphinstone-Centre as their MLA for nearly two decades.
“In a season of renewal for Saskatchewan politics and the Saskatchewan NDP, I have come to the hard decision that the NDP candidacy in Elphinstone could use some renewal as well,” said McCall. “The NDP has always been a party that works hard to make the lives of everyone in the province better. I’ve tried to do that to the best of my abilities in my years as an MLA, and I believe Ryan and the team are focused on continuing that into the future.”
“My family has come through a difficult winter with a number of health challenges, and this really brought into sharp focus for me the sacrifices that go with public office. After nearly two decades as an elected official, I look forward to new opportunities and ways to work to utilize my experience, my roots, and my voice for my family and my neighbourhood.”
REGINA—The Saskatchewan New Democrats set the rules and timing for a leadership contest at Provincial Council on February 26th. The new leader will be elected at a leadership convention in Regina in late June, 2022.
All Saskatchewan New Democratic Party members in good standing will be eligible to vote online or by mail-in ballot.
