Beck commits to hiring over 200 frontline officers, get tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime
REGINA – Today, Carla Beck committed to partnering with the RCMP to hire 100 more officers, something promised by Scott Moe and the Sask. Party but never delivered on.
The commitment is part of Beck’s plan to get tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime. Beck will also reinvest money from the cancelled Marshals Service to hire at least 100 more officers into local police services.
“I’ve heard from countless families who feel they can’t let their kids walk to their local school or the corner store down the street. People are genuinely worried,” said Beck. “Saskatchewan now has the worst violent crime rates in Canada. Scott Moe has dragged us to last place when it comes to public safety.”
Rather than address the issue of rising crime, Scott Moe and the Sask. Party have wasted the last couple years spending $14 million for a Provincial Marshals Service, a service that won’t have a single frontline officer in place until 2026. Both the RCMP and nearly 100 municipalities have openly opposed the Marshals, stating that it will draw away existing policing resources from frontline officers and communities.
“It’s time for change. Our plan will get tough on crime, with more resources to the RCMP,” Beck said. “We will also be tough on the root causes of crime, with more mental health and addictions treatment, and we’ll go after organized crime bringing poison into Saskatchewan’s streets.
“You deserve to feel safe in your own community. We’ll launch an all-hands on deck approach to giving communities the tools and resources they need to make our streets safer and tackle those root causes of crime.”
A Saskatchewan NDP government will take a different approach and listen to Saskatchewan people to make our communities safer by:
- Hiring more frontline officers to crack down on violent crime;
- Launch an Unexplained Wealth Taskforce to target organized crime and drug traffickers;
- Protect families, small businesses and places of worship with a $2 million rebate program for security updates like alarms, doorbell cameras and motion sensor lights;
- Investing more money in mental health and addictions services
