Mary Ann Harrison is the NDP Last Mountain-Touchwood candidate

Mary Ann Harrison was selected Friday evening to be the Saskatchewan New Democrat’s candidate in the Last Mountain-Touchwood constituency.

“Mary Ann’s energy and enthusiasm are infectious, and her priorities are clear,” said NDP Leader Cam Broten, who attended the nomination meeting. “The Sask. Party is burning through every last penny of Saskatchewan’s resource wealth, and then some. But it’s wasting far too much money on its own misplaced priorities, so everyday families just aren’t feeling enough of the benefits

“Mary Ann is determined to make sure more Saskatchewan families feel the benefits of the economy instead of just feeling the higher cost of living, and that’s why she’ll make a great MLA for the families of Last Mountain-Touchwood.”

Overwhelming 98 per cent approval vote for Broten

Cam Broten has overwhelming support from New Democrats in Saskatchewan, winning 98 per cent of the ballots on a leadership review vote.

The annual leadership review was conducted as a secret ballot vote, and was held Saturday morning at the NDP convention in Regina. The vote is a requirement of the Saskatchewan NDP constitution.

“The unity behind Cam is awesome, and the mood this weekend is incredible,” said Theresa Sabourin, president of Saskatchewan’s New Democrats. “This convention is really reflective of a growing feeling of excitement about Cam, and about better leadership for Saskatchewan families. Better schools. Better seniors care homes. A government that listens, and understands that the cost of living for everyday families matters.

“It’s clear that’s what Cam’s about, and people are responding to that hope for an even better Saskatchewan.”

Kaytlyn Criddle nominated in Regina Wascana Plains

Regina Wascana Plains New Democrats have selected Kaytlyn Criddle, a health policy analyst, to be their candidate in the next provincial election.

“Kaytlyn is a fantastic addition to the team, and she’s going to be an excellent MLA,” said NDP Leader Cam Broten, who attended the nomination meeting. “She’s focused on issues that really matter to families in east Regina and area, and on common sense solutions that are really forward-looking.

“There are many concerns about safety on Highway 1 east of Regina and area residents have been calling for practical solutions. Classroom sizes need to be capped so no student goes without the one-on-one attention they need and deserve in growing communities. Seniors in care homes need regulated minimum care standards and more staff so both their health and their dignity are cared for. These are the things I hear from families, and they’re the things Kaytlyn is running to take action on.”

Lyle Whitefish chosen as Saskatchewan Rivers candidate

Elementary school principal and former Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations vice-chief Lyle Whitefish will be the New Democrat candidate for the Saskatchewan Rivers constituency in the next provincial election.

Whitefish, a member of the Big River First Nation, was chosen in a contested nomination vote held Friday evening in Spruce Home.

“Lyle will be a strong voice for what matters to all families in the Saskatchewan Rivers constituency. He has incredible passion and common sense when it comes to education – a top priority for both of us,” said NDP Leader Cam Broten, who attended the nomination. “All kids in Saskatchewan deserve better schools with more resources in the classroom – and helping all students get ahead today is the best way to build the strongest future for them, and for the province."

New Democrats select Theresa Wilson as candidate for Canora-Pelly

School board trustee and Crop Insurance Corporation employee Theresa Wilson was chosen Friday to be the New Democrat candidate in the Canora-Pelly constituency.

“Theresa’s driven to give parents, teachers, front-line health care professionals and farmers the voice they deserve,” said Cam Broten, Leader of Saskatchewan’s New Democrats. “She knows that changes in the classroom should come through collaboration with teachers and parents. And she knows that rural families and businesses should be involved in setting government's priorities, especially when it comes rural investments.

“The Sask. Party government does a lot of yelling and cheerleading, and stubbornly refuses to listen. Theresa is a community leader who truly listens and focuses on what really matters to people.”

Ashlee Hicks is the New Democrat candidate in Moosomin

Ashlee Hicks, a member of the Cowessess First Nation, was nominated Saturday afternoon to be the New Democrat candidate for the Moosomin constituency.

“As a young mom, Ashlee gets the challenges that families face, and she wants to make sure her kids and all Saskatchewan kids have the brightest possible future,” said Cam Broten, Leader of Saskatchewan’s New Democrats. “I'm proud to have Ashlee as our candidate for Moosomin and I know that she'll be a strong voice for what matters most -- opportunities for young people, fairness and affordability for families, and dignity and security for seniors.

Saskatoon University New Democrats nominate Jennifer Bowes

Jennifer Bowes was nominated Thursday evening as the New Democrat candidate in the Saskatoon University constituency.

“Jennifer is making our strong team of candidates even stronger,” said Cam Broten, Leader of Saskatchewan’s New Democrats, who attended the nomination meeting. “She’s an incredible advocate and she's focused on what matters most. She’s devoted to helping others access opportunity, and giving everyone a chance to get ahead.

“In Saskatchewan, we’ve had record revenue and a government that spends every penny of it, and then some. But, where has all that money gone? Far too much of it has been wasted on this government’s pet projects instead. Far too little has gone to make a real difference for everyday families. I want government’s priorities to match the things that matter most to people – like repairing run-down schools and hiring more educational assistants, and ending high ambulance bills, long waits in emergency rooms and the seniors care crisis.”

New Democrats nominate Karen Purdy in Moose Jaw Wakamow

Karen Purdy, a licensed practical nurse, has been chosen by New Democrats in the Moose Jaw Wakamow constituency to be the candidate in the next provincial election.

“Karen is a great addition to our team,” said Cam Broten, leader of Saskatchewan’s New Democrats. “Moose Jaw needs a strong voice, and an MLA that’s in touch with what really matters to Moose Jaw families.

“This government has had years and years of record revenue, but it's had far too many misplaced priorities and it's made a lot of bad choices. We see the Sask. Party government scrapping the incredibly valuable hyperbaric chamber here in Moose Jaw. We see how they allowed their Lean consultants to shrink the size of the new Moose Jaw Hospital, so it will have fewer beds, fewer rooms and less staff. We see too many classrooms in Moose Jaw that are overcrowded and under-resourced. It's time for Moose Jaw to have an effective MLA, working to deliver opportunities for young people, fairness and affordability for families, and dignity and security for seniors.”

Michelle Oleksyn chosen by Lloydminster New Democrats

High school teacher and mother of three, Michelle Oleksyn, will be the New Democrat candidate for Lloydminster in the next provincial election.

“I’m so happy to welcome Michelle to the team of candidates,” said Cam Broten, who attended the nomination in Lloydminster Friday evening. “She has a real vision for Lloydminster and area – one in which the people who have done so much for our economy get their fair share of investment – into better highways, reliable health care with shorter wait times and a cost of living that makes it easier for people to get started in Saskatchewan.

“As a teacher, Michelle sees the results of this government’s choice not to prioritize schools and students. New Democrats are planning smaller class sizes. We will put educational assistants back in classrooms. We know our kids deserve clean and safe, well-maintained schools. With Michelle as the MLA for Lloydminster, I know we’ll have a strong voice in the legislature, fighting for Lloydminster schools and families.”
