REALITY CHECK - Sask. Party To Blame For People Leaving Province As Healthcare and Education Plummeted To Last Place

Scott Moe and the Sask. Party are to blame for letting healthcare and education fall to last place, a failure that has prompted more people to leave Saskatchewan than come here every quarter for the past six years.

“A graduate retention fee alone isn’t going to keep people here if they don’t have healthcare and education,” said Matt Love, Saskatchewan NDP candidate for Saskatoon Eastview. “Young people are fleeing the province as Scott Moe and the Sask. Party conveniently forgets that they need a family doctor and they need to afford their groceries.”

The failure of Moe’s government is widespread. More than 200,000 Saskatchewan people do not have regular access to a doctor and the province has the longest wait times for surgeries in the country. Moe is making his announcement today in Saskatoon, where the government has refused to address the emergency room crisis by extending the hours at the Saskatoon City ER to 24/7.

Students here receive less funding than anywhere else in Canada.

Moe and the Sask. Party responded to a cost-of-living crisis by actually raising the PST on families for everything from groceries to kids’ clothes.

“I hear from families everyday who tell me they cannot make ends meet,” Love said. “They were looking for relief and this government refused to listen. It’s time for a government that will get us out of last place on healthcare and education and make life more affordable for families. It’s time for change.

Statistics Canada reports that inter-provincial outmigration has outpaced interprovincial in-migration every reporting quarter in Saskatchewan since 2018.

Matt Love will be available to the media on location immediately after the Sask. Party press conference.
