Beck commits to cutting PST on kids’ clothes
Out-of-touch Sask. Party taxing kids’ clothes since 2017

SASKATOON – Today, Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck committed to axing the Sask. Party’s tax on kids’ clothing, immediately putting more money back into families’ pockets.

“I hear from parents every day who can barely make ends meet,” Beck said. “The Sask Party should have never put a tax on clothes for children. At a time when families are struggling, this was shortsighted and unnecessary — kids’ clothing isn’t a luxury, like Moe’s million-dollar trip to Dubai.”

Beck added, “It’s time for change. It’s time to support families and reduce their costs. We want to bring this tax break in right away, in time for families' Christmas shopping.”

In 2017, the Sask. Party hiked the provincial sales tax (PST) from five to six percent and added it to essentials like kids' clothing. Overall, the amount of PST Saskatchewan families pay has increased by over 40 per cent since Scott Moe came to power.

Moe’s tax on kids’ clothes costs parents, grandparents and caregivers over $20 million every year.

Removing the PST from kids’ clothes is just part of Beck’s plan to save families hundreds of dollars every year.

Beck committed to suspending the gas tax after the Sask. Party repeatedly refused to do so and she also committed to measures to stop the skyrocketing cost of rent across the province. Last week, Beck also committed to a healthy food school program to also save parents money.

Carla Beck and the Saskatchewan NDP kicked off their campaign for change earlier this month with a guarantee to not raise taxes and will soon release a fully-costed platform that balances the budget in her first term.
