NIPPI-ALBRIGHT URGES INDIGENOUS PEOPLE TO MAKE THEIR VOICES HEARD
REGINA - Betty Nippi-Albright, a candidate with Carla Beck and the Saskatchewan NDP for Saskatoon Centre, urged Indigenous voters to make their voices heard in the upcoming provincial election and vote for change.
“I’m here today in front of the Legislature with a message for the Indigenous people of our province,” said Nippi-Albright. “Your vote matters. This election, your vote matters more than ever before.
“I say these words, as a residential school survivor. I say this message, as the descendant of a Treaty 4 signatory. I say this message to all of you, because I know you believe it is time for change, just like me. The generation before us didn’t have the right to vote until 1960. However, now our vote has the power to change the government.”
Carla Beck, Betty Nippi-Albright and the Saskatchewan NDP believe that First Nations and Métis people deserve a true partnership with the provincial government where their Inherent and Treaty Rights are respected and they have economic opportunities, well-funded schools and hospitals, and more.
The Saskatchewan NDP’s plan for change includes:
- Working with First Nations and Métis leaders to implement the Calls to Action and Calls to Justice in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women final reports that are within Saskatchewan’s jurisdiction;
- Enshrining the Duty to Consult into law;
- Ensuring Northern Saskatchewan residents are full partners in building and growing our province, and restoring a physical presence for government in the North so that their voices can be heard;
- Working with First Nations and Métis communities and leaders on a recruitment and retention plan with targeted measures and indicators to get more Indigenous people working in healthcare – especially in Northern Saskatchewan;
- Apologizing for the provincial government’s role in the Timber Bay and Île-à-la-Crosse residential schools and working with the remaining survivors to provide meaningful supports; and
- Honouring the Treaty and Inherent rights of all First Nations and Métis people in Saskatchewan.
“We cannot afford 4 more years of Scott Moe and the Sask. Party,” said Nippi-Albright. “For too long, our people have been ignored and divided by politicians like them. It’s time for change. This election, you can vote to make that happen.”
