The Saskatchewan NDP will tackle crime by addressing its root causes — poverty, homelessness, mental health, and addiction. We will also invest in law enforcement and community safety programs.

Addressing Root Causes

The Saskatchewan NDP will increase funding for mental health and addictions services and use vacant government-owned housing units to provide stable housing for vulnerable populations.

Supporting Law Enforcement

The NDP will scrap the costly Marshals Service and redirect those funds to existing police forces. We will also work with the RCMP to hire 100 additional officers after the Sask. Party promised to, but failed to deliver.

Community Safety Programs

The NDP will offer rebates for security equipment like cameras and lights to help small businesses, homes, and places of worship improve safety.

Commitments for Change

  • We will work with police services to hire more than 200 additional officers.
  • Address the root causes of crime – like poverty and homelessness, mental health and addictions, lack of economic opportunity, trauma, social connection – to increase well-being and safety in Saskatchewan communities.
  • Increase funding to established Saskatchewan police forces and mental health and addictions services over four years.
  • Scrap the Sask. Party’s Marshals Service — which doesn’t put boots on the ground until 2026 — and redirect those dollars to frontline policing.
  • Bolster physical security for homes, places of worship and small businesses by offering a rebate program for security equipment, such as cameras and lights.
  • Develop an intimate partner violence action plan, working with those on the front lines.
  • Establish a Missing Persons office to provide information and support to families whose loved ones are missing.
  • Crack down on organized crime and drug traffickers with an Unexplained Wealth Taskforce.
  • Use the thousands of SaskHousing units currently sitting vacant to increase the supply of housing and the availability of supportive housing.
  • Break down barriers between ministries and different levels of government to ensure housing supports are available for people across the housing spectrum.
